Festival of Modular

Hataken and I started TFoM in 2013 when there was no modular scene in Tokyo. We knew a few modular artists, but we wanted to expose people to the incredible creative potential and diversity that modular synths offer. Our vision at the start was to be a catalyst for inspiring a new generation of modular artists and fans, by creating an event that combined domestic and overseas modular artists of a wide variety of styles, alongside an interactive exhibition of different module designers/makers. Beyond our wildest dreams, TFoM grew into an internationally-recognised festival with a unique vibe. It has been indescribably wonderful to see how a Japanese modular scene has started and then grown over the years, with so many modular artists, makers, and shops getting involved here in Japan. Also very gratifying is how many independent modular events are happening all over the place.

Hataken and I have many great memories from 10 years of TFoM, but behind the scenes we also faced some extraordinary challenges and stresses in running TFoM. We have always been motivated by pure passion, and have always operated as inexperienced volunteers, just passionate for modulars and the Japanese modular scene. In recent years we have been bolstered by an expanded core team with Roberto (Ipnoteca) and Hiroto (SARAAM), who have both provided amazing skill and effort to maintain the TFoM experience.

However, Hataken and I both feel that our time has come to retire from our organising role. We have felt for some time that we have hit the limit of what we are able to contribute to TFoM, as it has already gone past our initial vision, and we have many of our own other creative projects that need our time and energy. But we remain 100% committed to modulars, and our passion and friendship for the whole Japanese modular scene is undiminished, so we will not be disappearing! But after 10 years the time has come for a festival reset.

So we are officially retiring the TFoM name, along with KFoM, and the festival will continue as a simplified and unified FoM. Masayoshi Sakaguchi, who has tirelessly developed KFoM in recent years, will take overall responsibility for organising FoM, and Roberto will continue to take care of the overseas artists and makers as he done so brilliantly for the last few TFoMs. Hataken and I will have an unofficial consultancy role, and will still be around and cheering everything FoM! Of course many others too will also be involved in helping FoM carry on the spirit of TFoM.

I want to say publicly a huge thank you to EVERYONE who has been involved in TFoM in any way (organisers, volunteers, artists, sponsors, makers, shops, customers, fans, curious visitors). Modulars, for me, have always been about exploring the mysteries and complexities of sound with customised hands-on gear, and I love seeing how uniquely creative each artist and maker is with these beautiful tools. Yet more than this, I am forever grateful for how TFoM has provided many new friendships with so very many wonderful dear friends here in Japan and around the world. I love you all! See you around…

TFoMの終了にあたって

➖TFoM10年間の感謝

まず、2013年から昨年までの10年間、Tokyo Festival of Modularを支え、参加してくださったたくさんの方々に心からの感謝とお礼を申し上げます。この10年の間に様々なサブイベント、ワークショップを開催できたこと、それとともに私たちも成長できたことは感謝であり、紛れもなく人生最高の財産です。昨年皆様とともに10周年を迎え、祝うことができたことは何よりの喜びです。本当にありがとうございました！

TFoMの目的の達成

　今回、みなさまには突然のお知らせのようで恐縮ではありますが、TFoMの今後については(2020年コロナ禍でオンラインでのTFoM配信を余儀なくされた時、TFoMの歴史をダイジェストビデオをまとめた際や2021年にコロナ禍で中止を余儀なくされた時にも)都度Dave Skipperとも確認してきたことなのですが、このイベントの目的は既に達したのではないか、ということです。日本国内へのモジュラーシンセの紹介、認知度アップ、モジュラーシーンを生み出して活性化することについて、一定の成果をあげ『TFoMの役割は十分に果たした』ということです。TFoM以降、大手楽器メーカーさんがユーロラックモジュラーに関わる製品をリリースさせ、専門店が生まれ、多くのモジュラーシンセ・ユーザー、アーティストが誕生し様々なジャンルのモジュラーシンセのライブイベント、ワークショップまでもが開催されています。もちろんTFoMがなかったとしてもそうした流れは起きたことで、同じようなシーンの盛り上がりは間違い無くあったとも思います。しかし少なからずTFoMがそこに貢献できたのではないかという実感もあります。それはみなさまに信頼され期待していただけた証でもあり、海外でも知られるまでになりました。私たちの主催のテーマである、モジュラーシンセを楽しみ愛する『PURE』なモチベーションで利益追求を目的にせず、スタッフはボランティアでやり通してきたこと、だからこそ実現できたと信じています。

DaveとHATAKENのTFoM、という看板・ブランドの終了

　しかし、10年経って、私たち主催者二人を取り巻く環境やそれぞれが目指す新たなテーマが見出されてきました。そして『このまま同じような質で主催し続けることが難しい』と判断するに至りました。それぞれの新しい試みとは、もちろんモジュラーシンセを離れるものではなく、むしろ次の段階への挑戦であります。一方で感謝なことに、TFoMの必要性と継続を願う声多くもあって継続についてはとても悩みました。ありがたいことですし、ぜひ継続できるならと今年もギリギリまで模索してまいりましたが、やはり、Daveと私は主催者として働くことが無理だと実感したのです。私たちが離れてしまう以上、今まで通りのTFoMでは無くなってしまうことも実感しました。次世代の新しい自由な運営方針で生まれ変わるべきではないかとの考えに達し、DaveとHATAKENのTFoMの時代に終止符を打つ必要を確信しました。Dave SkipperとHATAKENという二人のアーティストの熱意により生まれ、少人数でもなんとか運営してこれた『Tokyo Festival of Modular』は奇跡です。みなさまに感謝しつつ、このイベントの主催者からは引退しTFoM10年の活動に幕を閉じることを決意しました。

新生イベント「Festival of Modular」として継続

　一方でそのことを関西で姉妹イベントKFoMを主催してくれていた阪口昌祥氏にその旨をお伝えしたところ、それなら東京の主催も阪口氏が『責任者としてそのままの規模で続けさせたい』と即答してくださったのです。そのバイタリティに溢れた進言をいただき、驚き、感動を覚えました。思えば阪口氏はKFoM主催者としての実績があり、ご自身でも多くのイベントを主催され、全国の多くのシンセファンに信頼されています。阪口氏からそのお言葉を聞いた時、『適任者がいたじゃないか！』と思わされた次第です。そのバイタリティ、モチベーションは比類がなく、私も大いに考えが改まりました。もちろんTFoMという名前の終了については変わりません。新しく生まれ変わるのです。TFoM、KFoMの隔たりを取り去り“Festival of Modular“としてコンセプトを引き継ぎつつ、阪口氏主導の元、次のフェーズに進む道が拓けたのです。

これから日本のモジュフェスはFoMとして、新たに阪口氏を主催者として、新たなフェーズに入ります。DaveとHATAKENは引退します。発起人、相談役として阪口氏のFoMを支えていく所存です。

10周年を気に新しく生まれ変わったFestival of ModularをTFoM、KFoM同様にご支援いただけましたら幸いです。新しいモジュラーシンセフェスティバルとして益々シーンを盛り上げ、時代に応じた役割を果たして行くことでしょう。どうか変わらぬご愛顧、ご指導、ご鞭撻をいただけましたら幸いです。

HATAKEN

この度FoMの主催をさせて頂く事になりました阪口と申します。

私は2019年から関西モジュラーフェスティバルのオーガナイザーをさせて頂いており今年で5年目の開催を控えておりましたが、今年からFoMの東京会場・大阪会場両方のオーガナイザーをさせて頂く事になりました。

私自身2015年に開催された京都モジュラーフェスティバルに訪れた際に大きな感銘を受け、その後今日に至るまでモジュラーシンセとそのカルチャーにのめり込んできましたが、私が感じてきた想いと同じく毎年東京モジュラーフェスティバルに参加する中でも関西モジュラーフェスティバルを運営する中でも、来場されるお客様、メーカー様、アーティストの皆様からモジュラーフェスティバルという場に対しての期待や掛け替えの無い想いを沢山感じてきました。

それらを今後も継続・発展する事が出来ればという想いで本当に微力ながら一生懸命取り組みたく思っておりますので、どうか皆様今後ともお力添え賜りますようお願い申し上げます。

阪口昌祥
